Artists

An artist is a person engaged in one or more of any of a broad spectrum of activities related to creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is certainly valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.

What do you think of singers who call themselves "artists", but don't write their own music?
Q. I thought that an "arist" made their own art based on their own life, feelings, and experiences, not someone else's.

A. Under that definition, classical musicians aren't artists. Any painter, sculptor, author or composer whose work is in any way a derivative of earlier work in the field may not be an artist either...and ALL art is in some way derivative of earlier work. I would humbly suggest that you're right on the money about art being the communication of self-expression. It is a complex language unto itself, that communicates with other humans on a manifold, sundry levels. Ella Fitzgerald didn't write her own stuff. Vladamir Horowitz didn't either. I could go on and on, but you get my drift. Art has more to do with honesty and the struggle to express oneself in new ways. In this sense the source of the composition is related but not a requirement. But… [cont.]

A. YES! why can't anyone make up their OWN words! or melody? you forgot to add Gwen Stefani, and the Pussycat dolls to that list. It makes me so mad! and a lot of times people will hear a song by a band/artist today and not even know it is a remake or parts of it are from someone elses song. I am so tired of hearing these artists and the same stuff over and over.
